One of our favorite things to do at Bird Studio is painted wall coverings. These interior murals are a special addition to new or old spaces, and are completely custom from start to finish.

The commission pictured here was a huge labor of love over the past year, and we’re pleased to present the finished installation images.

As you can see, the wall covering perfectly complements and extends the view of this property out the windows, creating a continuous horizon line that adds an illusion of space and openness. We added many custom elements into the image, including the owners’ dogs, a beloved apple tree, and buildings from the property.

The painting is produced in the studio on belgian linen and then cut into strips for installation by a professional paper-hanger. This allows us to spend all the hours required to get it perfect without the constraints of a construction schedule or mess. See more here!

Summer is the perfect time to spruce up an exterior space, like this outdoor bar right on the shore. Our “Mr. Toppy’s Bar” sign was hand-carved out of mahogany and gilt with 24k gold, which will last for a lifetime. The quality materials and classic design combine to create a focal point for this elegant space. Many thanks to Fiammenghi Design for bringing us on for this project.

Recently we had the immense honor to work on a genuine George Nakashima credenza here in the studio.

It was exciting to be able to restore this piece to the original intent of the artist, and have a hand in continuing the Nakashima legacy.

Zack has become knowledgeable in Nakashima’s signature elements like dovetail joints, butterfly joinery and live edge slabs of american black walnut. We like to think we’re continuing on the ethos of the Nakashima emphasis on using quality materials and with an emphasis on timeless beauty.

After the painting on our large “mural wall” was taken down, we quickly filled the space with dozens of new sample boards for fine finishes.

The process of “sandboxing” or developing new finishes is integral to Bird Studio’s process. We’re not here to present something you’ve already seen, but to offer something unique that fits each project perfectly.

In the research and development phase of any project, Zack spends time looking at inspiration from artists, the history of decorative arts, and very often from nature itself. He creates patterns and finishes that bring the excitement of natural and built environments. What inspired him? Anything from patterns on bark to contemporary art to the patinas on old buildings.
